Indian Head Massage
Indian Head Massage (known as “Champi” in some parts of India) has been practised there as a family ritual for more than 5000 years. It was brought to the UK by Narendra Mehta in 1981. It is based on the ancient Ayurvedic healing systems. Ayurvedic medicine is a holistic healing system which combines natural therapies and encompasses the mind, body and spirit. It strives to restore balance and inner harmony to the mind, body and spirit to improve the health of an individual.
The massage is performed on the shoulders, neck, scalp, and face, with the client sitting in a chair. The therapist uses their hands to knead, rub and massage the muscle tissue. Doing this releases muscle tension, thereby allowing the blood to circulate better and with it carrying oxygen and nutrients which are so important for the function of the brain. It also increases lymphatic flow to help rid the body of toxins and other waste products. Indian Head Massage is very much an experience of soothing and calming sensations, releasing chemicals called endorphins which create a feeling of contentment and happiness.
