Manual Lymph Drainage

MLD in action

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique that works through the body's fluid system to activate the circulation of the tissues and stimulate the functioning of the immune and nervous systems. The result of these actions can include reduction of oedema and detoxification of the body, as well as many other benefits.

The proper functioning of the lymphatic system is critical to our body's ability to operate at peak performance. This system drains fluids, detoxifies and regenerates tissues, filters out toxins and foreign substances and helps us maintain a healthy immune system. If lymph circulation stagnates, however, toxins accumulate and compromise cellular functioning, which opens the way to physical ailments.

MLD was developed by Dr.Emil Vodder in the 1930s. The therapist uses gentle rhythmic wave-like movements with hands and fingers; they are neither tiring nor straining but a light touch, and easy to use. These subtle manual manoeuvres activate lymph and interstitial fluid circulation, which help to encourage lymph movement and eliminate waste from the body.

MLD therapy can help in two main groups of conditions. The first is lymphoedema: swelling and fluid retention, often in the arm or leg, after breast or other surgery. MLD can reduce swelling and soreness, and may eventually reduce the need for compression sleeves.

Secondly, MLD can help with cosmetic and wellbeing conditions such as facial puffiness and swelling, water retention and the effects of cellulite.

Other conditions can also respond to MLD therapy. These include:

  • Other causes of swelling or oedema: ulcers, swollen ankles & venous oedema
  • Effects of trauma: bruising, dislocations & joint problems
  • Chronic and painful conditions: migraine, arthritis, repetitive strain syndrome, bronchitis, sinusitis
  • Chronic skin problems: acne, eczema, scars, wounds & blisters
  • Nervous system: stress, constipation, digestive problems, irritable bowel syndrome
  • Menopausal problems
